Here is the plain truth about doing things in Da Nang: the two best experiences in the city cost 40,000₫ (about $1.60) and nothing — the Marble Mountains and the free walk up to Lady Buddha on the Son Tra peninsula. The most expensive thing here costs 950,000₫ (about $37), the Ba Na Hills gate, and it is the only genuinely big spend on the list. Everything in between is 15,000₫ noodles, a 60,000₫ museum and a free bridge that breathes fire twice a week. Two to three days covers the city; a fourth buys Hoi An.
The price spread is the whole story
Da Nang is not an expensive city to do things in. It is a city with one expensive thing in it, and fourteen cheap ones that are mostly better.
Almost every ranked list of this city buries the numbers. Here they are up front. The Marble Mountains charge 40,000₫ (~$1.60) to enter, plus 15,000₫ for the lift and 20,000₫ for the Am Phu hell cave, and take two to three hours. Lady Buddha is free and open roughly 06:00–18:00. The Dragon Bridge fire show is free, Saturday and Sunday at 21:00, and lasts about five minutes. Those three are the spine of a first trip.
Against that, Ba Na Hills charges 950,000₫ (~$37) at the gate, the most expensive attraction ticket in Vietnam, and it is worth it exactly once, on a clear day, on the 08:00 cable car. If you only have one splurge in your budget, that is the decision — not whether to pay 60,000₫ for the Cham Museum, which you should.
The second thing to hold on to: most of what people come here for is not in the city. Hoi An is 30km down the coast road, My Son is 69km inland, the Hai Van Pass starts 20km north. Three things on other guides do not exist any more
Two of the attractions still listed on most Da Nang guides do not exist any more. Da Nang Downtown — the old Asia Park, with the Sun Wheel — closed permanently on 3 September 2025 and is being demolished for a 70-storey tower. Helio Center and its night market have been suspended since 5 September 2025 for renovation, with only the Metiz cinema still running. If a guide is recommending either, it has not been updated in a year and you should not trust its prices either.
The third is Cocobay, the abandoned condotel complex on the Da Nang–Hoi An coastal road. It has been a ghost site since 2019 and every revival announcement has come to nothing. The 15 best things to do in Da Nang
The Marble Mountains
The best-value thing in the city and it is not close. Five marble karsts on the Hoi An road, with cave pagodas cut into the rock, a glass lift for 15,000₫ if you do not want the steps, and the light beam through the roof of Huyền Không cave that lands best on a sunny morning between 09:00 and 11:00. Add 20,000₫ for the Âm Phủ hell cave, which is the strangest 20,000₫ in Vietnam. Open 07:00–17:30; wear shoes with grip, the marble steps are slippery.
Lady Buddha and the Son Tra peninsula
A 67-metre Guanyin looking out over the bay, free, on a jungle peninsula that holds most of the world's red-shanked douc langurs. Go early or late for the monkeys and the light. One hard rule that catches people out every week: automatic scooters are banned on the steep upper loop past the pagoda and checkpoints turn them back — take a manual, a car or a jeep tour. The Dragon Bridge fire show
A 666-metre steel dragon that breathes fire and then sprays water, every Saturday and Sunday at 21:00 plus holidays. The bridge closes to traffic around 20:45, so be in position by 20:30. Stand near the head and you will get soaked, which locals treat as luck. Best free spectacle in the city, and the gridlock afterwards is real — walk, or wait twenty minutes.
Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge
Vietnam's priciest ticket buys a record-holding cable car, a French-themed village, 100+ indoor rides in Fantasy Park and the giant stone hands. It also buys a 1,487m mountain that fogs in for months with no weather refund. Worth it once with a clear mountain forecast and the 08:00 cable car; a waste on a grey November afternoon. Families get the most out of it by a distance.
My Khe beach at 05:00
The beach is the reason half the city exists, and the local version of it happens at dawn. Da Nang swims at 05:00 and again from 17:00, and is largely empty at midday when the sun is punishing. Swimmable roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and the red flags go up. Rip currents are the actual danger here — swim between the flags. A day in Hoi An
Thirty kilometres south, legally part of Da Nang since the July 2025 merger, and the single best day out from the city. The yellow Bus No. 1 does it for about 30,000₫ every 20–30 minutes from 05:30 to 17:50; a Grab is 250,000–350,000₫; a tourist shuttle sits in between at 120,000–250,000₫. Go late afternoon into the evening for the lanterns rather than the midday coach crush.
Eat mì Quảng, properly
Da Nang's own dish and the reason serious eaters rate this city above Hoi An: turmeric-yellow wide noodles, a small amount of concentrated broth, peanuts, herbs and a sesame cracker. 25,000–70,000₫ a bowl. The Museum of Cham Sculpture
The world's largest collection of Cham sculpture, in a French colonial building at the west end of the Dragon Bridge, for 60,000₫. Small, and consistently described as world-class. It is also the piece that makes My Son make sense — the best carvings were removed from the sanctuary and are in here. Open from around 07:00–07:30 to 17:00.
The Hai Van Pass
Twenty-one kilometres of coastal switchbacks to 496m, the summit gate restored and reopened in 2024, and Lap An Lagoon on the far side. Three ways to do it: the heritage train through the pass from about $24, a US Army jeep tour at $60–90, or an easy-rider motorbike at $55–65. Do not ride it yourself on a 1949 international permit — see the licence trap. Views die from October to January.
My Son Sanctuary
A UNESCO Cham temple complex in a jungle valley, 150,000₫ including the buggy and the Apsara dance, open 06:30–17:30. Worth the trip if ruins interest you and you go at opening or late afternoon; underwhelming at 11:00 in a coach wave, in heat, after Angkor. Pair it with the Cham Museum in either order and it lands much better.
A cooking class with a market run
The best rainy-day purchase in the city and the best-value guided anything. Most classes start with a market walk, cover five dishes, and hand you lunch at the end. $25–45. It is also the one activity that survives a 650mm October, which is why it appears again on the rainy-day list.
Mikazuki water park and onsen
A Japanese-run indoor dome water park with a genuine onsen attached, on the quiet bay coast about 10km northwest. Weekday 350,000₫ adult and 170,000₫ child; weekend 400,000₫ and 250,000₫; the onsen is included. Open Mon–Fri 09:00–22:00. Indoors, which in this city is a category-defining advantage from September to December.
An hour of massage
At 250,000–450,000₫ an hour plus a 50,000–100,000₫ tip, this is the cheapest luxury on the coast and the standard move on a wet afternoon or after a day of marble steps. Booked-ahead spa packages through resellers run around $25 with hotel pickup, which is worth it if you are out at Non Nuoc rather than in An Thuong.
The Han River night cruise
An hour on the river past six lit bridges, from about $7. On a Saturday or Sunday the boats position mid-river for the 21:00 fire show, which is the version worth paying for; on a Tuesday it is a pleasant, forgettable hour. Buy the weekend sailing or skip it and watch from the east bank for nothing.
Con Market and Han Market
Con Market on Hùng Vương is the food hall locals actually use — a hawker alley of 15,000–50,000₫ plates that peaks between 15:00 and 19:00. Han Market on Trần Phú is the souvenir-and-dry-goods one with áo dài tailoring upstairs and a decent stall floor. Both are indoors, both are free to walk, and both beat the night markets for eating.
