Planning Da Nang is four decisions and a lot of noise. The month — late February to April is the answer and October gets 650mm of rain. The base — Da Nang or Hoi An, stay in one and day-trip the other. The visa — 45 days free for twelve nationalities, a $50 90-day e-visa for most of the rest. The licence — Vietnam recognises only 1968-convention IDPs, so most Western permits are invalid and your insurance is void in a crash. Da Nang is nine times bigger than it was in 2024
On 1 July 2025 Da Nang absorbed Quang Nam province. The city went from about 1,285 km² to 11,860 km², and Hoi An and My Son are now legally inside Da Nang — two UNESCO World Heritage sites within the city limits. Districts were abolished for a city–ward system, so the old names (Hai Chau, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son) survive colloquially and on Google Maps but not on paperwork. Practical consequence: any visitor statistic quoted for 2025 or later covers the merged city and cannot be compared with pre-2025 figures.
For planning purposes this changes three things. Hoi An is now a district of your destination, not a separate trip, which strengthens the case for basing in one and day-tripping the other. My Son is inside the city limits, so a Da Nang trip that skips it is skipping a UNESCO site 69km from the hotel. And any 2025-or-later visitor number you read covers the merged city and cannot be compared with anything published before it — which is why this site quotes prices and rainfall rather than visitor counts.

Nothing here is a Da Nang-specific product — it is the standard pre-flight kit. The reason it matters in Vietnam specifically is the licence rule: if you ride on an invalid permit, an ordinary policy will not pay out.

How many days should I plan for Da Nang?
Two to three days for the city and a fourth or fifth for Hoi An, My Son or Hue. Nobody in any forum thread argues that two days is too few, which is telling. Long-stayers think in one-to-three-month blocks because that is the visa length, not because there is a month of sightseeing.
Can I use my driving licence in Vietnam?
Only if your international driving permit is a 1968 Vienna Convention one. The permits issued in the United States, the UK, Australia, Canada and Ireland are 1949 Geneva permits and are not valid here — riding anything over 50cc on one is illegal, the fine is 1–2 million₫, and your travel insurance is void in a crash.
Is Da Nang a good base for central Vietnam?
