My Khe Beach, Honestly: When You Can Swim and When You Cannot
Mỹ Khê is free, several kilometres long, backed by a promenade and exercise stations, and TripAdvisor ranked it the 6th best beach in Asia in 2024. Sunbeds run about 40,000₫ (~$1.60), there are showers and surf schools, and lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. The thing nobody tells you: this is a dawn beach. It is busiest at 05:00 and again from 17:00 to sunset, and nearly empty at midday, because locals swim before work and after it and treat the middle of the day as unusable. Swimming is realistic March to August; from September the swell builds and by October the water is effectively closed.
The flags, the season and the thing that actually kills people here
Swim between the flags, and take that literally. The sea off My Khe is calm and swimmable from roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and red flags go up, and the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers October to December. The real danger is not sharks or jellyfish — it is rip currents, which drown people here most years. Lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. Look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving out to sea: that is the rip, and it is the bit that looks safest.
The beach is divided into named, flagged swim sectors — the main ones sit off the Pham Van Dong entrance and along the stretch marked T20 to T18 — and those are the only places with lifeguards. Swimming outside them is common and is exactly how the drownings happen. Nobody will stop you. That is the point.
Two smaller practicalities. Jellyfish appear in summer pulses and after storms; they are painful and almost never dangerous, and they barely register in local discussion compared with the currents. And the sand gets genuinely hot between 11:00 and 15:00 in May to August, which is half the reason the beach empties out at midday.

The dawn-swim culture is the real story of this beach
A photograph captioned “Da Nang beach at 5am” is a recurring hit on Reddit for a reason: at first light this is one of the busiest public spaces in Vietnam, and by 11:00 it is deserted.
Locals swim before work. From around 04:45 the sand fills with hundreds of people — swimmers in the flagged sectors, groups doing exercises on the promenade stations, badminton, football, and a whole economy of coffee carts. It happens again from 17:00 until dark. The middle of the day, which is when most visitors show up, is the emptiest and worst part of it: no shade, hot sand and the strongest sun.
The practical version: set an alarm once. Sunrise over the Son Tra headland from the water at 05:15 is the single best free thing in Da Nang, and it costs you one early night. Coffee on the promenade afterwards runs 20,000–40,000₫.
Facilities are straightforward. Sunbeds about 40,000₫, freshwater showers and changing blocks at the main entrances, deckchair and towel hire along the strip, and surf schools with boards. Agree the price of anything before you sit on it — the beach towel and lounger hustle is a low-grade but persistent annoyance on the busy stretches.

The beach is eroding, and it happens every monsoon
Between October and December 2024 a severe erosion episode stripped roughly 100 metres of sand and dike from My Khe and damaged the shoreline up at Man Thai. It was the worst recent case, not a one-off: the monsoon swell cuts the beach back every year and the city rebuilds it, so the width of the sand in March is not the width of the sand in November.
What that means for a visit. In the monsoon months sections of the beachfront are fenced, machinery works on the dike, and some access ramps close. None of it makes the city unvisitable — but if you are booking a beachfront room for November on the strength of a photograph taken in April, understand that the beach in the photograph may not be there. Getting on the water at My Khe
The beach itself costs nothing and always will. What is worth booking ahead is anything with equipment and an instructor, because the good operators on this strip are small and the seasons are short — motorised hire runs roughly April to September, and surf lessons run the opposite half of the year.

The beachfront wall along Vo Nguyen Giap — Four Points, Radisson, Hilton Garden Inn, A La Carte and a long row of Korean-oriented four-stars — puts you across the road from the sand for $40–60 a night in the four-star band, against a city average of about $84 for a five-star. The trade-off is that the beachfront is a hotel corridor rather than a neighbourhood: An Thuong, five to ten minutes back, has the cafés, the bars and the walkable grid, and costs less. Rates fall sharply in October and November, which is also when the sea closes.
